Yes. In most cases, high-quality teether rings made from food-grade silicone are safe; they are usually free from harmful substances such as BPA, PVC, or phthalates, and are suitable for babies to chew on and grasp.
However, it is important to note that your customers should not tie the ring around a baby’s neck to keep it in place, nor should they allow babies to use them unsupervised. Doing so could pose a risk of choking or strangulation.
Your customers can store the silicone teethers in the refrigerator at 2 to 8°C and give them to their babies after letting them sit for a while. This can help relieve gum discomfort during teething. Before giving the teether to the baby, be sure to check that it isn’t too cold. If it is, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before offering it to the baby.
However, unless specifically approved by the manufacturer, silicone teethers should not be placed in the freezer. Extremely low temperatures may cause them to harden slightly and become too cold, which may affect the baby’s comfort while chewing or cause discomfort to their gums.
Compared to smooth surfaces, the raised bumps and ridges on textured silicone teethers are more effective at massaging a baby’s gums. For babies going through teething, these toys can also help relieve gum discomfort. In addition, the variety of textures provides babies with different chewing experiences, which helps develop their sensory skills at an early age.
High-quality silicone teethers are quite durable, and there is no set replacement schedule—it mainly depends on the extent of wear and tear. Your customers should check them regularly for any signs of wear or damage. If they notice cracks, tears, discoloration, or stickiness, they should replace it immediately. With heavy use, replacing them every 3 to 6 months is a good practice.
Your customers can sterilize silicone teethers with boiling water, especially after they’ve been dropped in public places or when their baby is sick. Bring water to a boil, then submerge the silicone teethers in the water for 3 to 5 minutes. After soaking, use clean tongs to remove them from the hot water and allow them to cool before handling. Place them on a clean towel to air dry.
Most silicone teethers can also be sanitized in the dishwasher. Your customers can place them in the top rack of the dishwasher according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid using abrasive cleaners.
Before storing them, make sure the silicone teethers are completely dry. You can recommend that your customers place them in a clean, dry container or a zipper-lock bag. Note that it’s best not to store them with other toys to keep them clean and prevent contamination from dirty surfaces or toys.
Silicone teethers offer good elasticity and tear resistance, and are unlikely to crack or deform under normal use. Water-filled teethers rely primarily on their sealed design; if damaged, there is a risk of leakage.
Furthermore, most food-grade silicone teethers can be sterilized in boiling water or in a dishwasher, whereas water-filled teethers are generally not suitable for high-temperature sterilization.
Compared to wooden teethers, silicone teethers are non-porous and do not easily absorb moisture, and they are less likely to harbor bacteria when properly cleaned and stored. However, once wooden teethers become damaged, dust and bacteria may get trapped in the cracks, and this can make them difficult to clean thoroughly. Over time, this can affect the baby’s health.
Furthermore, the surface of most silicone teethers is generally softer than that of wooden ones, so they are less likely to hurt a baby’s gums if the baby accidentally chews too hard.
